ISS - Institute for security systems

Welcome!

The Institute for Security Systems – ISS – as part of the University of Wuppertal concentrates on basic issues concerning the protection of people and infrastructures. Critical infrastructures are the backbone of modern societies and become more and more the focus of current threat scenarios. By means of physical protection, surveillance and detection characteristics as well as by intervention options security systems provide an essential contribution to backup our living conditions.


As a scientific think tank active in the field of fundamental research concentrating on security systems, the institute operates - according to the vision of its founders - theory- and model-oriented. Thus, it contributes actively to international research and by this means adds its methodical and systems competence in order to assess and optimize security systems concerning fields of application relevant to society.


Main strategic fields of research and working areas are the following:
•    Development of security metrics
•    Objective and quantitative assessment and optimization of security
      systems
•    Cost benefit analyses of security measures
•    Security-related risk and scenario analyses of critical infrastructures
•    Rational risk assessments concerning contradictory requirements of safety
      and security or decisions based on AI
•    Innovative security systems
