Secure Authentication of security systems

A fundamental principle of modern cryptography is Kerckhoff's principle: a secure crypto-logical system always requires the disclosure of the underlying algorithm (open systems). The technological implementation of this principle requires besides an adequate software as a consequence the application of standardized hardware components. Together both aim at overcoming proprietary standards; as a consequence open systems may be realised whose security levels are quantifiable. The quantification of existing safety standards is not only a necessary condition to improve security technologies but besides the user acceptance represents a key criterion for future market success. This user- and market-oriented approach complements the present research program.

The demand for research particularly focuses on finding technological solutions based on open standards which could be evaluated objectively in terms of safety. Superior security systems can be identified at market economy conditions and therefore be preferred by customers because they meet essential client needs, and i.e.

  • correspond to the current state of verifiable cryptographic methods
  • are compatible to systems used in public spaces (interoperability)
  • take into consideration personal rights to a large extent
  • allow optimal freedom in the selection of systems
  • because the trade-off between safety and comfort requirements is transparent.

Research activities are therefore subject areas which fit into the central dimensions of social and individual security, technological security as well as dissemination and acceptance. The systematic development and dissemination of advanced security systems is realized by integrating main research results from key cryptology technologies, biometrics as well as mechatronics complemented by findings of acceptance research.

The highest value to be protected are the users' personal rights (authentication without identification). Their observance also has a high social relevance. An essential requirement for this protection is the sovereignty of personal data. The further spread of innovativesecurity technologies besides compatibility with already existing systems (interoperability) requires the self-sufficient integrability into existing infrastructures; security systems have to be as well seamlessly networked.

Against this background, a marketable dissemination of innovative safety technologies may succeed if research is being conducted together with companies focussing on a special market.

Research activities which focus especially on the development of open soft and hardware systems that overcome the obstacles of widely accepted proprietary standards and therefore enable an objective evaluation of security so that the individual user may choose between alternative providers are partticularly promoising. This means sovereignty for the user over existing technologies.

In terms of open innovation processes realized by acceptance analysis marketability has to be ensured at all possible levels. This is the way technology push and market pull complement eachother by means of systems' integration in order to disseminate innovative security technologies in our society and for this reason improve civil safety.
