New VDI Technical Committee: Synthesis of Safety and Security

New VDI Technical Committee: Safety and Security (Origin: Bergische Universität Wuppertal, K. Wolf)

Entitled “Safety and Security” a new technical committee was constituted on April 7, 2017 in Düsseldorf as so-called “FA 512” under the umbrella of VDI (Verein Deutscher Ingenieure). Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai-D. Wolf will lead the new committee.

Modern products and processes have to meet a full range of requirements which date back to the original field of safety (especially functional safety). At the same time innovative trends like “industry 4.0” and the increasing application of networked IT-systems imply a growing threat for i.e. critical infrastructures and enhance the danger of successful attacks due to insufficient security measures. This is extremely valid in the field of physical safety. Right now, existing standard models and regulations will not allow to define a common description of safety and security as single domains. As a consequence a further definition of the entire security risk resulting is not possible so far.
At the same time, trade-offs which may arise from contradictory requirements with regard to safety and security have not been dealt with systematically so far in an early stage of development and planning.

The new technical committee 512 should now close this gap. Prof. Wolf and the Advisory Board of the Technical Division “Safety and Reliability” of VDI GPP (VDI Society of Product and Process Design) identified first missions and tasks. One of the major quests will be a methodological merging of safety and security aspects in order to further develop a comprehensive system for analysis and evaluation.
Entitled “synthesis of safety and security – a security/safety analysis and evaluation across multiple domains” an initial status report of the new technical committee – which consists of 25 experts from science and business - has been scheduled.
Further meetings and workshops are being prepared. The first regular meeting took place on July, 11, 2017 in Düsseldorf at the VDI headquarters. Since then the committee has been meeting regularly.
